The perspective and confidence of investors in Zambia remains unchanged, despite the firing of Dr. Chitalu Chilufya as Health Minister earlier this year, according to economist Trevor Hambayi.
Mr. Hambayi said in an interview with S24 business that changing the perspective of investors would take additional steps that showed more accountability.
Republican President Edgar Lungu terminated the appointment of Dr. Chilufya as Minister of Health with no reasons given and immediately replaced him with Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Minister Dr. Jonas Chanda.
It is widely suspected that he was removed due to a scandal that was recently unearthed during the Public Accounts Committee hearing about the Ministry, under the leadership of Dr. Chilufya, having authorized the distribution of faulty drugs, condoms and gloves.
“This is a good thing that we have started to take measures that are speaking to us having to do the right thing,” Mr. Hambayi said.
He added: “Dr. Chilufya initially already had issues regarding accountability”, citing a court case against the fired Minister in July last year when he was charged with four counts of possession of properties reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime.
He was acquitted in August the same year after the state failed to produce further evidence against him.
