Unionised lecturers at the University of Zambia (UNZA) say they won’t go back to work if they are not paid their May salaries.
The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) president, Dr Evans Lampi said “the problem is perennial and as far as the union is concerned, management is in breach of the law”.
He said if management want a smooth reopening of the university, they need to pay the salaries.
“Management needs to be prudent as they reopen the university. Everything needs to be in place including people’s salaries. I know our members and they will not be motivated to come to classes,” Dr Lumpi explained.
He further said the union does not want another hurdle to the education of the students who had already lost a lot of time due to COVID-19.
Last week, the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Brian Mushimba said colleges and universities would be reopening on Monday, 08 June 2020.
