The Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation (ZUNO) has called for the immediate investigation into the procurement of medical supplies and authorisation of medical supplies at the Ministry of Health.
In a press statement dated 11 January 2021, ZUNO General Secretary Fray Michelo welcomed the dismissal of former Minister of Health Dr. Chitalu Chilufya and has called for immediate investigations into the procurement and authorisation to distribute defective medical supplies and essential drugs.
Mr. Michelo suggested that Zambia Medical Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and Medical Stores Limited (MSL) should be investigated as well.
He went on to say that the recalling of the drugs is not enough because they have been in circulation since September 2020.
Mr. Michelo expressed concern about health workers’ safety as they have been subjected to exposure to various infectious materials through the use of defective personal protective equipment (PPE).
The General Secretary has urged the government to replace the defective supplies with proper and adequate supplies as soon as possible.
He has further welcomed Dr. Jonas Chanda as the new Minister of Health and has reiterated that nurses and midwives are expectant of health incentives that were promised by the Head of State during the COVID-19 period.
