Various drugs have been recalled by The Ministry of Health due to expiration.
During an impromptu visit to Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) – formerly known as Medical Stores Limited yesterday- Minister of Health Dr. Jonas Chanda expressed concern that the agency is still keeping expired drugs in its warehouse and not disposing of them.
“The medical supplies and drugs are a danger if they find themselves on the market,” he said.
The Health Minister said the drugs could pose a danger to unsuspecting members of the public if they were to fall into the hands of unscrupulous people.
Dr. Chanda is concerned about drugs expiring while in storage when the government spent a large amount of money to procure the drugs.
He has since requested for a report within 24 hours from the agency.
The Minister said it is regrettable to have expired drugs while various health facilities are experiencing shortages.
He believes the change of name to ZAMMSA will bring an end to wastage of resources through expired drugs and procurement loopholes.
