The Zambia Medicine and Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) is concerned about the use of a drug called Ivermectin, by members of the public, for the prevention and treatment of covid-19.
In an emailed press statement, ZAMRA Senior Public Relations Manager Christabel Iliamupu said the drug has only been registered and certified for use in Zambia for veterinary purposes.
She further stated that the authority has advised members of the public against self-prescribing the Ivermectin injection as there is currently no conclusive clinical data to support its safety and efficacy in fighting the covid-19 virus.
The Authority has further cautioned importers and distributors of veterinary medicines to adhere to good distribution practices and standard treatment practices, in order to avoid misuse of medicines, adding that non adherence will result in prosecution.
She went on to say that the authority, in collaboration with other stakeholders under the leadership of Ministry of Health, will continue to provide updates to members of the public on the latest information related to the prevention and treatment of covid-19.
