In major European football news, former President of the famous Barcelona football club, Josep Maria Bartomeu and several other senior officials of the Catalan team were taken into custody.
The clubs training facilities were raided on Monday morning by the Catalan police force, shortly after a police spokesperson confirmed that the arrests had been made in relation to corruption charges against the team.
These charges are in relation to the case which has become popularly known as ‘Barça-gate’ where the club allegedly hired a social media company to publicly discredit their rivals, including those within and outside the club.
The speculation emerged after it was reported that documents were said to show the inner workings and financial transactions of the club, which caused a stir in the Spanish media at the time.
The club released a statement saying the local authorities from Mossos d’Esquadra’s Economic Offences Unit were at the team’s headquarters on Monday morning but did not provide any further details.
