Nuclear Power Online Video Competition Launches in Africa

To ignite more interest in science and technology, Rosatom – a Russian state corporation that specialises in nuclear energy – has launched its annual online video competition for African youths.

The competition, which is open to students and young professionals between the ages of 18 and 35, encourages the youth to explore nuclear technologies and how they could be utilised to benefit their region.

According to Chief Executive Officer of Rosatom Central and Southern Africa, Ryan Collyer, nuclear technologies are at the heart of many innovations that Africa can benefit greatly from.

“Rosatom strongly believes that the youth need to play a vital role in achieving the United Nations Sustainability goals and more specifically in the fight against climate change,” Mr. Collyer said.

The competition, which has been running since 2015, is intended to inspire young people across the continent to explore the benefits of nuclear power and potentially embark on careers in the nuclear industry.

Participants are encouraged to post their videos on Facebook, submit their applications to the email or by the link to online submission form

Winners will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Russia, where they will visit several tourist attractions, as well as various nuclear institutions and advanced nuclear facilities.

The top three winning videos will be selected by an independent expert panel observing various criteria including originality and creativity, overall quality of the video and content, and accuracy and relevance of technical content.

Potential topics include: How nuclear technologies can assist in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) in African nations; how non-power related nuclear science and technology can benefit countries or communities; myths and fears about nuclear and how to overcome them.

An individual or a team of one to three people are allowed to submit one application, and the video duration must not exceed 75 seconds.

Videos must be in English or include English subtitles, and they can be shot on both professional camera equipment or with a smartphone.

The submission deadline is the 31st of January 2021
